SAT Prep

There are several options available for enrollment. The Premium course includes the Three-Day Blast curriculum.  The Premium course continues for an additional 10 hours of instruction following the conclusion of the Blast course.  The Math Launch is a separate course option focusing on the math section of the SAT only.

Requirements for enrollment:  Students must have taken the PSAT or SAT and completed Algebra I; students must bring laptop/Chromebook and a calculator (TI-84 or TI-84 Plus preferred)

Option 1:

Three-Day SAT Prep Blast

The SAT Prep Blast course concentrates on SAT reading, vocabulary, and writing skills along with math practice. The course includes practice in taking the SAT, as well as strategies for the question types (sentence completion, vocabulary, critical reading, and writing – finding errors/revision). Learn to approach the test analytically and with confidence and practice effective test-taking strategies. Examine the kinds of questions and content of the test, the format of test sections, and practice the skills and techniques for each type of question. Review useful approaches for eliminating guessing, using actual test questions from the past. We use authentic practice materials as well as other SAT practice resources available through the College Board and Khan Academy. Practice work will help identify individual strengths and weaknesses, so additional practice can be tailored to a student’s specific needs. SAT Prep Blast will allow for a full SAT practice test with scoring and feedback.

This class meets on one Monday, one Thursday, and one Saturday for a total of ~7 hours of instruction.

Option 2:

Premium SAT Course: Three-Day SAT Prep Blast + Section Specific Lessons

The SAT Prep Blast course concentrates on SAT reading, vocabulary, and writing skills along with math practice. The course includes practice in taking the SAT, as well as strategies for the question types (sentence completion, vocabulary, critical reading, and writing – finding errors/revision). Learn to approach the test analytically and with confidence and practice effective test-taking strategies. Examine the kinds of questions and content of the test, the format of test sections, and practice the skills and techniques for each type of question. Review useful approaches for eliminating guessing, using actual test questions from the past.

The SAT Section-Specific Course will concentrate on both the Math Section of the SAT and the Evidence-Based Reading, Writing, and Language Section of the SAT. Every lesson consists of three parts:  instruction, guided practice, and scored practice. We use authentic practice materials as well as other SAT practice resources available through the College Board and Khan Academy. Practice work will help identify individual strengths and weaknesses, so additional practice can be tailored to a student’s specific needs.

Both the SAT Prep Blast and the SAT Section-Specific Course will include full SAT practice tests. Students participating in the Premium SAT Course will have the opportunity to take 2 full SAT practice tests. Teacher/student ratio does not exceed 1 to 15.

This class meets on three Mondays, three Thursdays, and two Saturdays for a total of ~17 hours of instruction.

Option 3:

SAT Prep Math Launch

The SAT has four math sections. This course will provide instruction and additional practice resources for Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math and Additional Topics. Heart of Algebra entails analyzing and solving equations and systems of equations, creating expressions, equations, and inequalities to represent relationships between quantities and to solve problems, and rearranging and interpreting formulas. Problem Solving and Data Analysis encompasses creating and analyzing relationships using ratios, proportions, percentages, and units, describing relationships shown graphically, and summarizing qualitative and quantitative data. Passport to Advanced Math incorporates analyzing relationships using ratios, proportions, percentages, and units, describing relationships shown graphically, and summarizing qualitative and quantitative data. The fourth, smallest section includes Additional Topics in Math. Additional Topics involve Making area and volume calculations in context, investigating lines, angles, triangles, and circles using theorems, and working with trigonometric functions.

This class meets on two Mondays and two Thursdays for a total of 8 hours of instruction.
